Thanks. I had a feeling it would be down to the good will of the engineer/company.

Last time I got someone to pull the machine out and change the fuse, and then the machine was trapped mid-cycle :s Oh well, at least I can do a washing again.

You got someone to change the fuse? You can change the fuse yourself [it's like feminism didn't happen in here at the moment].
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I am guessing that Lou Lou knows how to change a fuse, but probably found it difficult to pull out the washing machine to get to the fuse! I know I would struggle, they are not exactly light!

Thanks, yes, I can change fuses (and do light DIY jobs and decorate :P) but I couldn't move the hulking thing. It's an 8kg machine.

I was expecting a few kicks to my ego so I'll accept it gracefully.

Now my Candy CIV1000 tumble drier won't work! The power button only stays on as long as my finger's pressed into it (mentioning in case anyone has this model).

Had a dead Dell desktop last week, I swear the technology gods are against me.

The call out fee is just that, a call out fee. As long as they "call out" that fee has to be paid, on top of any works that are required. If the engineer was called out 40 times a day because of a blown fuse/not switched on he/she wouldn't make any money by not charging a set call out fee. If you go to work you expect to be paid!!
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

I only picked this company as they are the main Servis engineers apparently.

I know an appliance repair company that has no callout and is very fair with prices and service (wish I'd went with him, but wanted to have more clout with the retailer). So they'll be looking at my tumble drier next. He installed appliances in this flat and my last place.

Quite a few companies do "no call out charge", though maybe some balance that by higher charges (not that guy, luckily). Thanks for the advice.

I know, I'll have to think of a way to weigh down the button somehow..obviously I'll check the timer's working too! A little bodge job will do until I get an engineer out.

I'll try some parcel tape later on.

    Please don't do this!
It could just be a faulty switch or, it could be doing it for a reason you nor I know as some kind of safety measure.
For example, it wont start if the door is open, an easy thing to see.
Or, it could be another failsafe mechanism that's not so obvious.
Perhaps someone in the know can clarify/advise better.
Until then, I'd urge you not to take the above advice.
You have been reading.....another magnificent post by garethgas
