12 month contract on rental property?

Hi,
Recently put a deposit on a place and got the tenancy agreement / contract which is for 12 months?
Is 12 months an average? I have always seen 6 months before.
My concern is we really like the place, plan to stay for over a year, but what if it turns out the neighbours are nightmares from hell?
We would be stuck there for 12 months and just have to ride it out?
In that respect is a 6 month better for the tenant (and even the landlord when looked at from the other side)?

You can ask for a 6 month break clause which can be activated by either the tenant or the LL. They may or may not agree.FREEDOM IS NOT FREE0

I might be wrong but I think some flats have clauses in their lease that only allow subletting for a minimum of 12 months.0

If you ask for a six month contract or a break-clause at the six months mark your landlord risks having to pay to find new tenants all over again. This may not suit them, so you risk not being offered any contact at all if you don't feel that you could commit.0

A 12 month contract is better as far as agency fees are concerned. Just once a year instead of twice. If your worried about the neighbours knock on a couple of doors and ask about noise etc. It's someone else's fault.0
