what if anything entitled too

My husband had a serious head injury and lost his career in the Navy, he had 8 months rehab now he has his own gardening business I organise it all he goes and mows lawns/weeds ect

He cant function in a busy environment, very poor memory, has anger management issues - he has had DLA but he is improving.

I'm scared they will stop his money, but he wont be able to work for a company and he needs very frequent breaks and can only work part time - so working for himself solved our problem... but it isnt a big earner

Is there anything else that he maybe entitled too? I'm worried now as we manage his problems alot better and have stratagies in place for everything - so now I wonder is it improvement or just alot better management from me?

Sorry to hear of the problems and if you input details in this web site you may get some answers.

  • I can't offer any advice through experience but I know there are a lot of small charities out there that specificly deal with head/brain trauma and if there is one that covers your area, they may be able to help you with things like benefits or know of places that will employ your partner in a situation which is compatable with his disabilities. Unfortunately I don't think there is a nation wide charity for this area of disability so it best for you to search online yourself for your locality, perhaps go to your local CAB, Library, community centre etc and ask.

I've got head ways leaflet on benefits and how best to fill in a DLA claim, but with all the shake ups I'm not hopeful.

I guess its hard really hard, and dave has lost everything and is working hard to be self employed - his depression wont get better if he goes from being a petty officer in the navy to a dead end job. He has pride in being self employed, but he cant work enough to earn a living and if his dla stops then... he may have to accept putting cherrys on cakes is his limit :(

Its so sad. I'm so angry he wants to work he wants to be proud of himself

    thanks for the replys

  • Could Headway help with some councelling? It may help him to come to terms with his new life after head injury. Also, I was thinking, my local area has something called Care & Repair which is sort of a charity, it helps people who are disabled by providing things like a plumber, electrician etc who are all checked out so no worries about being fleeced or taken advantage of.. Anyway, I was wondering whether you could find out if this is something that is available in your area and whether your partner could see whether he could become part of that team as a handy man, as well as working for himself as a gardener.

It's ok to work and claim DLA as it's not an out of work benefit. If he still meets the criteria of his DLA award there's no reason it will stop just because he's started doing some work.

Does he claim Employment Support Allowance? - this is an out of work benefit but it is possible to do some work while claiming.
