NETGEAR WGT624 Wireless Router

Hi Folks - need som help please.

I bought one of these routers today, with the intention of giving my daughter internet access in her room. she has my old PC which is a Pentium 450 with windows 98Se.

I asked before purchasing, if I would be able to connect this PC wirelessly and was told there would be no problem.

But I'm having loads.

I think I have it installed okay on the main PC but on the other PC the USB Adapters light is not lit.
Also when I click on the newly installed icon on the 98 Pc a meny appears and then disappears again virtually immediately.

My first question is have PC world told me the truth about windows 98 and if they have can anyone offer any suggestions as to what I can try.

Thanks in advance

  • Are you on cable broadband, or do you have a bt line?

What is the other wireless equipment that you have.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Telewest.

I do have a powered USB hub that I could hook up ( or do I, I might not have the drivers for 98)

I can try and look them out if you think it will help

  • The router will work with 98, either using a wired connection to an ethernet card, or any usb/pci card with drivers for 98.

You'll probably have to use wep encryption though, rather than wpa.

  • I have tried changing to WEP but still having no joy.
  • what is the model of the usb adapter?

Can it see anything when you scan for networks? Is your ssid broadcasting?

  • Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the powered usb port doesn't seem to make any difference.
The USB adaptor is recognised through installation, but no networks are available to choose from.
The quick install guide only gives xp and 2000 options which is making me think that 98 isn't supported.

The router is broadcasting as i managed internet access on my pda

I have found this on the netgear website which I think backs up my theory thhat it isn't suitable for Win98se

The usb adaptor is a WG111T and I believe software is 1.3

    WG111T Downloads Drivers / Firmware
Version 1.3 (No Windows 98 or Windows Me)
Version 1.2 (Supports Windows 98 or Windows Me)
    Utility
Initial Release Version 1.1(No Windows 98 or Windows Me)
