Car Hire in Switzerland

Options
We are going to Geneva for 3 days in October, we got 2 easyjet return flights with a 22kg luggage allowance for £154 (including card fee). And the Etap is costing us £220 for the 3 nights. We've booked for a tour around CERN as that was my boyfriends must do, mine is going to the Giger museum in Château St. Germain, which is miiiiiles away from where we are staying. I'm currently looking into hiring a car as my other half drives and has been driving for 10 years. I've found a few ok looking deals but neither of us have a credit card and neither of us really want to get one (we are bad enough with money as it is). They all seem to require a credit card and very few places are willing to do a cash deposit. Has anyone got any ideas or tips on easy car rental in Switzerland without a credit card? (I'd apply for one but I'm not sure I would be accepted for one)

Have you considered using public transport? The rail system in Europe is far superior to the UK one and it may be possible to visit the museum this way

Hi, as Alfescodave as pointed out, public transport in Switzerland is very good. You could get the train from Geneva to Gruyeres and take a taxi from there. Here is the Swiss Railways website:

Car rental without a credit card is very difficult. And even if you get one you may find that the credit limit you get is too low to satisfy the rental company (they like having lots of security when you borrow their nearly-new car).

Have a great time in Switzerland. And do be aware that if you are staying in Geneva then the hotel will issue you with a local travel pass for free. So a car in Geneva is not necessary at all.

  • Both you guys are legends! I've managed to pin down a train with only 1 change, hopefully it won't have changed by then! I'm very excited now! Thank you! :D
