HUGE HUGE electricity meter reading!

Hey, I know you guys get this all the time, but I needed my own thread to refer back to.

On the 19th July I read our electricity meter as 35995. I received a bill covering the period 19th and 20th of July as I have recently taken over the flat's eON account (flat-share, four people), and their estimate was 36550. The previous account holder said this was wrong, that we hadn't used that much electricity in a day, and to do another reading and call up.

This letter was received six days after my previous reading.

I went to read the meter, and found it had gone up to 98842!!!!. The cog was turning really fast, too!

Spoke to eON - they said it was worth £7k! - and they're sending someone out. I saw online you can try testing the circuit breakers - if the cog on the meter still turns, then apparently it is either down to a broken meter, or a leak, or someone using our electric.

I'm about to test the breakers, but the cog's slowed down a lot and two days after this huge 98842 reading, it's now 98873. I've a funny feeling the cog'll stop when I test the breakers, so where do I go from there?

eON have said that going from 35995 to 98842 in six days is nigh on impossible, so they said they want to investigate and then talk about it. I'm worried they'll just do what I would have done in the shape of a breakers test, and report the same (that the cog stopped), and try to charge us.

Any idea what it could possibly be? I'm going to do the breakers test this morning so I can report back within the hour.

  • I should tell you that I'm rooting for the meter to keep going when I test the breakers - I've no idea what's wrong otherwise!

Think about this 98842 - 35995 equals to 62847kwh. Divide that by 6 gives you 10474.5kwh/day. Divide that by 24 gives you 436.4kwh. Or to put it another way 145 3kw fires running 24 hours per day for 6 days.

Sounds like they have redirected the regional supply through your meter haha.
I wouldnt worry too much its clearly a problem with their meter but i wouldnt mess for fear of being accused of tampering.
  • It's actually continued! So something's definitely up.

If the engineer is not going to be out for a day or two I would photograph the meter daily, possibly twice a day, to show them when they arrive especially in case it manages to go round the clock back passed 35995 before they come. May also help you when agreeing revised reading with Eon.

  • Told eOn about the experiment. Got put through to Cross Meters who cancelled my Aug 5th appointment as it was too basic. Sending out an engineer on Aug. 8th to see if we need a new meter. They said likelihood is they'll reset the new meter to read 35995 - the reading on 19th July.
