Bagged coins

I have seen this on other threads....

After putting any change from time to time into a large, thick and old vodka bottle over many months i decided to count it and bag it yesterday. £ 164 in total :)
I braved todays snow and went to pay it in to my Nationwide current account ( to transfer later for savings ). I get there and they still won't accept more than 5 bags of any value !
So i walk down the road to the Halifax where i have a credit card ( 0% ), an ISA Direct and opened yesterday a regular saver ( 7.07% ) and an instant saver.
Surprise surprise they will only take 5 bags. But i can't pay into any as the ISA is internet related and the instant saver has not been fully opened yet ( they are waiting for signed document, in the post ).

The thing is they won't even change it for cash notes for me despite me having 4 accounts with them !

And theres me thinking these places are BANKS ?

Can anything be done to change this ? Or anyway around it ?

We may as well do away with coins if you can't even put them in bank accounts.

i put in coins regularly and have prob;ems with a few banks in the past.
These days I just use barclays as they dont really have a problem with coins. Alternative is to take it to a post office they love it... as they sell change to people.... hence makes them money haha

Usually the traditional banks (eg HSBC, Barclays, LLoyds) are better about handling all forms of cash than the Building Society banks.

There are coin machines in most supermarkets, I know our local Sainsbury's have them.
You dont even need to seperate out the coins as the machine does it all for you. At the end you get a voucher to put towards your shopping bill.

The only drawbacks are that the do levy a surcharge of about 5% i think so you dont get all that you put in and that you dont get 'real' money back either!

the coinstar machines in ASDA branches give you a reciept which you can take to the customer services desk for real money.

I think NatWest are very good. I brought in over £50 of charity money once (wasn't sure what to do) and they just exchanged it for cash until I could find the sort code and account number (had to go home) but this means that you don't have to bank with them.

  • Why not pay it in when you have 5 bags or less rather than when you have more than 5 bags?
