Kew Gardens.

My partner & I are spending three nights in London soon, she is a very keen gardener and would like to visit Kew.
I can have 2-1 so the cost is not too high, but a friend has said that its a waste of money.

Just wondering what MSEers think? I would welcome youe opinion.

Depends how well travelled you are. I thought it was brilliant when I was a keen gardener and at that time had not been abroad. It was also a long time ago but I can't imagine that it could have changed much. It's probably more interesting in the Spring when different rhododendrons come into flower. If you are used to living in a hot country with its habitat, then perhaps that would take the edge off Kew a bit.

I have been to Kew many times and I have never seen all of it. The tree top walkway is wonderful you can see for miles. I really recommend going.

It is fabulous and you can spend all day there. Their food is expensive though.
  • Kew is well worth a visit. The glasshouses are splendid and if you take a picnic you can enoy eating it by the lake. In the evening you could go to Richmond (which is walking distance) for a meal and a stroll along the river.

maybe your friends just aren't that interested, but a very keen gardener is definitely going to enjoy a day at Kew Gardens. I think it's pretty good value for money on the 2 for 1. I used to live near Kew and often took friends there when they came to visit. Nobody was ever disappointed.

  • Hi was there last Sunday, a beautiful day. Arrived about 1 PM and left there about 6.30 PM, but didn't see it all.

I thought it was good but my wife was disapointed. She was thinking there would be a lot more flowers there. If you are looking for flowers you will be disapointed I feel. Better to go somewhere like the Beth Chatto gardens in Colchester for that.

But lots of nice trees, the tree top walk is great, the glass houses are nice. The Japanese pagoda in one of the corners is nice to see.

Where comfortable shoes, if you want a serious look around there is a lot of walking!

Like someone said food is expensive there so take some food and drink in. If you arrive by underground there is a Yesco Metro just outside the station which is handy for sorting your food and drink out for the day.

Have a sit around one of the lakes there and have a rest when you want to eat.

Glass hours close at 5.30 PM, so allow to visit them before that time. We made the mistake of rushing around at the end.

Take your camera I think we took about 230!

All in all we have been to better places we think, my wife said it lacked the wow factor, but well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The glass houses contain lots of plants that you rarely see. I drink coffee all the time but never knew what it looked like to last week!

Underground is about a 10 minute walk to the gardens.

    Hope this helps.
