As we seem to get first frost later now (I'm in the South East) I sow quite a few things in August - early carrots, beetroot, all the salads, french beans (bit risky, but usually get a crop).
I also sow leaf beet and swiss chard.
The very best though are all the oriental vegetables. Cover with fleece straight after sowing. You can crop mizuna and choy sum within a few weeks.
You can also sow spring cabbages late July/early August.It is never too late to become what you were always intended to be0
