Sub-woofer making low humming noise

Hey again!

As if my desktop hasn't been trying my patience enough this week, now the sub-woofer has a low humming noise coming from it - this is solved by switching off the speakers but obviously I get no sound then.

Actually, as I'm typing this, the sound is pulsing, e.g. on [2 secs] off [0.5 secs] etc.

When I turn the volume on the speakers up, I hear a bit of hissing/mild crackling - I've tried this disconnected from the computer so I can rule out any influence of the desktop, so I'm thinking is there anything I can do or has the sub-woofer decided to die after 4 years service? :(

Happy New Year

It could be that some shielding is breaking down and picking up interference. One thing I always ask at this time of year, are there any flashing Xmas decorations which could be causing interference? Also, does moving the s/w make any difference? You could find that moving it lessens or worsens the problem.

It could be a problem with your soundcard of course. It might be worth trying another set of speakers or headphones to check whether the interference is still present - if it is then the problem is not the speakers.
