"Ethical" Voluntary Work for Youngsters

volunteer experiences tend to be expensive because more often than not charities have to essentially babysit volunteers who have little/no skills to offer, e.g. teenagers (I am generalising here, I'll admit). Taking on a volunteer is a big commitment for a charity as they're responsible for the volunteer's welfare, training, etc. That's what organisations like VSO tend to be very specific about the type of volunteer they'll take on and the skills that volunteer can bring to the table...they do have a young person's programme, though, which may well be worth looking into.0

'the skills that volunteer can bring to the table'
This seems to me the key issue. What does she have to offer that a local person can't do? What can she do that will benefit the community without her being able to give a long-term commitment? What work (and yes, it is work) is she prepared to do?0
