I don't know about anyone else, but I find it very difficult to get up to the suggested limit of 28 units a day.

We were recently indoctrinated with the news that alcohol abuse was becoming a major problem.
So, surprise surprise, the decision was made to increase VAT on booze.
Now retailers and pubs have complained that the booze sales have gone down.
And now, yes you’ve guessed it, we are being told once again that a little of the stuff is good for you. (At the increased price of course).
So drink up and feel glad that you are contributing to this Country’s financial deficit.

It is well known that the alcohol well being limit of units for women and men was plucked out of thin air with no evidence base at all in the 80's - admitted on Radio 4 Today programme this morning and I have heard/read this before.

It seems they are likely to 'allow' an extra glass of wine a week. A week!

We seem to have the lowest 'suggested limits' in Europe. I might move to Italy, where you can have an extra bottle a week.

Alcohol should be rationed. New govt. dept. should be set up to oversee this and all adults should be issued with ration books - for alcohol purchases.

It already is rationed, the ration coupons are various colours and allowances, they all have the Queen's head on them

Lower level alcohol tokens, for smaller purchases, are also available and also carry the Queen's head stamped on them

Various Government departments issue the coupons, for the retired they are issued by The Pension Service, for unemployed it is DHSS

For those working their employer issues the coupons

Having re-discovered Punt e Mes (and an online supplier) I am in danger of becoming an alcoholic. It's the taste not the alcohol. Once I start...
On the other hand a recent purchase of Morrisons vermouth (a horrible sickly sweet concoction) is sending me back to tea total again. I can just about tolerate a teeny bit in a glass of fruit juice. So it's all good! (till I finish the b* 'vermouth').

They made it up! The unit advice for alcohol consumption. It was a finger in the air job in the seventies.

What annoys me is that alcohol consumption is seen to be 'worse' than smoking. No wonder everyone lies to the doctor.

Oldbiggles.. They tried to stop everybody from smoking, but kids are smoking now at a much younger age due to the fact that their parents are sooo stressed out after stopping smoking ,issuing 'no smoking rules',(sanctimonious sods) kids are rebelling and starting to drink earlier too.
Personally, I will not deny myself anything that makes me happy,I will continue to have my 1 nightly drink of alcohol ( not spirits) as it helps me sleeps, I am in my 70's and intend to get to my 80's with my liver intact.
    Cheers everyone!
