Renewing with BT, including line rental saver

Our current line rental saver and Anytime calls expires 24 August.
1. Have I understood correctly that our next quarterly bill, due on 12 August, will show 3 months line rental in advance at £13.90 a month (total£41.70), less 12 days credit for the period we've already paid, ie about £5 credit, ie about £36.70 net charge? And that I can't renew line rental saver until after 24 August? And that, if I manage to renew it exactly on 24 August, the £36.70 won't be credited until our next bill? Or have others managed to insist that sums like this £36.70 are refunded forthwith?
2. Any advice on the best deal I can aim for in renewing Anytime calls? I am wondering about downgrading to evening and weekend calls, without line rental saver, for a week or two, and then upgrading to Anytime with three months free, plus line rental saver.
