Amazon

Not an auction site I know (well not really). Wondered what peoples experience of it was. Just sold a load of CDs quickly on there, and was going to start on my book collection, but find many people selling books for a penny! (good tip, anyway, lots of bargains there!) Can't see why they would do this though, hardly worth the effort? Can anyone explain?

I think it's because,as a seller you get a set amount for postage regardless of what it costs to send the book.So if the book is light you can make a profit on the postage. Also alot of those at really cheap prices are from the States so they would get the overseas postage allowance, which I believe is quite generous. Not actually sold anything on there myself but last time I was looking into it I noticed there were set fees paid for postage.I'm guessing it's the same with CDS you sold?

    Hi there,

I use Amazon to recycle my old books and have found it great. Know what you mean about the £0.01 books though but as BigKisses said if you have a light weight book you make a little profit there - weigh your books before listing them!

I have also just listed my lot on Greenmetropolis.com which has a different system to Amazon - for every book sold you get £3, from which you find the postage. Not actually had a buyer from here yet though. Greenmetropolis also make a donation to The Woodland Trust for every book sold through them - 5p I think.

I look in my local village hall/fetes etc and pick up books I want to read for 10p or so. When I've finished with them they go on the web, if they make a 50p profit then I am well chuffed - made about £20 so far!

I thought Amazon wa quite slow for sellingbooks ?Also how does it go with buyingbooks from a uk company who gets it shipped fron US does it mean that the buter pays overseas postage ?

If it says "ships from the USA" you pay the overseas postage ,which is about £7 I think. Also if you buy more than one book from the same seller you can't combine the postage charges.

If you're going to list books, please make sure you do it right. I thought I was getting a bargain, but it turns out the seller was selling a different edition to the one it said

    did you return it??

    i would have done.

As a seller I have listed different editions and stated they were, also buyers have asked before hand to clarify that they are buying exactly the right book. (Most recently a modern classic).

my 'best' amazon sale though ....... was to some one with the same name as the author. Being nosey...... i asked if they were related..... it WAS the
author, who had been asked by a museum for a book as part of the thier latest display.

I prefer ebay to amazon as you know what day you will have to post it out whereas with amazon you can get an email anyday and you have to post out within two days.

I didn't return the book, as it came from America even though it said UK! And I'd already waited ages for it to come.

I have no idea whether it works on ISBN's or not. I did think about selling some CDs, but it told me to sell them for about £1 each, so I decided it wasn't worth it.
