Toilet smells when flushed

We recently bought our first house and it needs a lot of work. One issue we have is that when we flush the loo a smell emerges which is not very nice
I'm not sure how the smell of the sewer can be coming up when there is obvisously water in the trap. Any ideas?

If the toilet is fed by water from a cold water tank above (in the attic), look in that tank to see if it's been contaminated with anything. Open the toilet cistern up and see if it's reasonably clean and free from contamination.
Where is the smell actually coming from? Could it be that the toilet flush is syphoning the water out of the other traps (basin, bath, shower) and you're getting the smell from there?
Is the smell only apparent as the toilet flushes, or does it persist afterwards for a while?0 -
Look outside for the nearest manhole ... could be a blockage.
The water in the toilet trap will be blocking the smell coming into the bathroom, but during the flush, air will escape (smelly air in your case) << maybe I should rephrase that ??0 -
My toliet always smells after I've used it....."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Hey everyone, thanks for the replies - didn't think I'd had any as I thought I'd subscribed to the thread.
Yes the smell lingers. It's hard to tell exactly where it comes from but seems to be from the toilet room.
Will look into the other responses.Proud to be a moneysaver! :cool:0 -
Well I read the responses to my husband who immediately went and lifted the manhole cover. I thought he'd checked them all already but for some reason he checked everyone apart from the one right outside the toilet. Low and behold its completely blocked.
Will borrow my dads drain rods and get to work.
