I think there must be people who sold at the peak in 2007 and then bought a similar place at 20% cheaper 12-18 months later, but when solicitors, removals, stamp duty and EA fees are all accounted for, I can't imagine the money made would have been significant. And I'm certain that there are many more greedy STRs who sold too early and would have to take a big hit to get back on the ladder. I think most of them spend their days on HPC convincing themselves and any other readers that they're right all along and that house prices are going to fall off a cliff tomorrow.

There are some really sad people in this world that put too much time into making fun of others.

This thread pretty much epitomises that
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

I couldn't care less about Johnathan Davis, or anyone who bases life-changing decisions on financial advice from randoms off an internet forum.

Would you care less if Ray Boulger came onto the news and said "House prices are going to fall by 40% to 50% in the next three years" then you discovered that Ray would greatly benefit if this were to come to fruition? That is in effect what JD did - he appeared on television as though he were an impartial observer when in fact he stood to lose rather a large amount if house prices did not "correct".

When I said "Do not read if you do not want to" I didn't mean don't read then submit a comment.

Ray Boulger just goes onto the news and says house prices will rise. He was the one that said house prices would not fall in 2007.

As for all this other nonsense about people STR'ing and losing money. Yes, they may have lost money.

But then so have lots of BTL's who got their timing wrong and bought in in 2007/8.

So have lots of people who have decided to sell shares, decided to wait to buy shares at a lower price, decided to hold onto shares hoping for more.

So have people who bought into metals, commodities at the wrong time.

So have people who bought 4X4's before the new 4x4 tax was announced.

So have people who signed up to fixed electricity deals before electricity prices fell in 2009/10. So have people who didn't sign up to a fix before prices rose.

Would you rather someone came on the news and said "House prices are going to crash" and then you found out he owned 5 houses? Would you trust anything he said given he obviously doesn't believe what he's saying?

If someone did that I would be disappointed if people didn't want to discuss them on a house price debate forum.

Do you think it might be time to let it go?

JD is forever on the radio litteraly urging and pleading people stay away from property, so the more alternate narratives to his we get, the better.

The guy is incredibly arrogant and blinkered - I've actualy debated with him more than once. Clearly an intelligent chap, but utterly lacking in street smarts.

    Thank you, my feelings exactly.

At the early stages of my involvement in the HPC site it was immensely frustrating to see five or so people debating house prices on Sky or BBC and for JD to be portrayed as just some bloke who had an amazing insight into the market and that, you know, he might just be right.

Ironic that he had more to lose than any of the other commentators and yet he had the cheek to say something like "I've got nothing to gain by being so pessimistic on the housing market". No, not much John, just that you jumped off while prices were in the ascendancy and that you now find yourself renting a place that's got to be more than £2k per month (although I am sure he will tell us that he got a great deal and his landlord is actually subsidising him).
