have a look at THIS thread which has some good information about growing in pots and bags. I managed rocket, potatoes and tomatoes in grow bags and planters and other things in a little veggie patch that my Dad built for me. Cant wait to get started again next year:cool: Official DFW Nerd Club Member #37 Debt free Feb 07 :cool:0

I would love to grow veges this year, but i can't
We have deer in the garden nearly every day, and they would LOVE fresh veges... they eat everything else
They are so lovely to look at, but a pain to my gardening!Save the earth, it's the only planet with chocolate!0 -
Last year I planted 6 x "tumbling tom" plug plants (3 x yellow, 3 x red) in two large pots by my backdoor. Also in the pots were nasturtians (all parts are edible) and herbs. I weighed the tomatoes every time I picked them and ended up with 26lbs of tomatoes in total! Also really good in pots are chili peppers and bell peppers, you can either grow from seed or buy small plug plants for under £1 each (I have had trouble trying to germinate in the past). I brought the chili plants into the conservatory in October and they are still going strong! Another way of using small spaces is to use the "square foot" gardening system whereby you divide a small bed into squares and plant different crops into each. Its amazing the amount of crops you can grow! I also have dogs and made raised beds which just about keeps them off the plants! happy gardening0

I would love to grow veg and have looked at getting a raised bed but my garden (and house sometimes) has loads and loads of slugs and every time I have tried with pots of herbs and toms they have all been eaten away. Can anyone tell me how to deal with them?Jane

I had a look at the pictures of your plot, they are great. How deep did you make the boxes and what soil did you use? Can't wait to get started.0 -

I have heard that using crushed eggshell around the tubs should stop them from getting to the plants. We have a huge problem with slugs in our garden so il be trying this out myself0 -
I used to grow fruit and veg in pots all the time as my ex landlords wouldn't let me plant anything in the garden...
Tomatoes work quite well in pots, and smallish varieties of beans or peas. Strawberries are good too. One year I did try growing baby sweetcorn in a pot... bad idea, as although the corn grew fine (and did taste very nice), the plant was so tall that the pot would fall over with the slightest breeze! If I was going to do it again, I'd make sure that the pots were heavier - or wedged in place with something.
My garden is also infested with slugs - horrible things! One of my gardening books suggests trying to encourage birds and hedgehogs into your garden as they may feed on the slugs and help keep the numbers down. This year I planted some marigolds and for some reason, the slugs went for the marigolds before they attacked the vegetables... I'm not entirely sure why, as I had thought that marigolds were one of the plants that they were supposed to hate?...0 -
Im loving this thread
have been wanting to try and grow my own veg for a while now but was never brave enough to attempt it but now with finances taking a tumble thanks to boyfriend not working i figure its time to become a little more self sufficient and i think growing our own veg will save us a fair bit
bf doesnt see the point he thinks it will be cheaper to buy a bag from good old mr T's - that soon adds up though - think 68p every weeks is £40 a year almost on carrots alone!! Can definatley make a saving here and the travel costs just to get to the carrots in Tesco costs me £3 a time!!!
will be looking today at the threads and makign a list of what i need and might go and get all i need tomorrow!Time to find me again0 -
last year i had great success with growing strawberrys in hanging baskets, i also grew cherry tomatoes (tom thumb i think) in baskets as well. In tubs i grow lettuce, normal sized tomatoes, radishes and small carrots. This year i'm going to try new potatoes in an old dustbin. I've also decided to dig a veg patch as well. I can't wait for spring now.
