Unauthorized transaction on credit card

in Credit cards
Where to start!
We rented a car from AVIS rent a car in greece, we bought an damage excess waiver which covered us from paying the 900 euro excess should we have a prang.
anyway, we get out of avis in greece, drive down a one track road and go head on into another car on a bend.
straight back to the hire car place and get another hire car, fill out a crash report and drive off, Avis say they will let us know whats happening in a few days.
we hear nothing.
we go back 2 weeks later at the end of the holiday and they tell us they couldnt get hold of us, and they have spoken to the insurance company who wont cover the crash on insurance because our driving was wreckless.
it says in their terms and conditions if driving is deemed wreckless you will have to cover the costs of repair yourself.
We gave them our credit card at the start of the booking and this was only for a 900 euro excess to be paid, not 3500.
now because they say we were on the wrong side of the road on a single track road, and we had no chance to speak to the insurance company directly i might add, they have gone and taken all the money.
I have called the credit card company and told them the transaction is unauthorized, but they seem to be hesitant on helping us to get the money refunded, is it a chargeback they call it?
My point is,
1 - we shouldve been given opportunity to speak to car insurance company directly before them making a judgement that we were wreckless (no police on scene, so our word versus other drivers word)
2 - if we were having to pay for the cost of the repair outside of the insurance - shouldnt they have given us the opportunity to compare against 2 or 3 quotes rather than charging us for a quote?
3 - in the UK wreckless driving would mean you were convicted of it? no police were called, how can they deem it wreckless?
help me out, we cant afford to pay the £3500!! surely credit card companies can protect their customers from these cowboys and do a chargeback? it is unauthorized.

drive down a one track road and go head on into another car on a bend................ they have spoken to the insurance company who wont cover the crash on insurance because our driving was wreckless.(My highlighting)
Sorry couldn't resist that !
Anyway......... I daresay that in the small print that you agreed to there is something about you paying for any damage that was done to the car.
Therefore it isn't unauthorised !
I don't think your card company will be falling over themselves to help you, but all you can do is write to them and explain what happened
Dealing with Avis in Greece will be difficult to put it mildly.0
