Expensive AA membership for existing customers??
I've just had my membership renewal letter come through and they are going to charge £121 for roadside and relay and 'complimentary' home start for being a valued member.
Why is it so expensive when as a new member I can join and get the same cover for £69.
Any else been in same position - can you bargain with them or just join a different breakdown company?

My renewal was over £160 when I could have paid £89 as a new customer. I phoned them to discuss it - and they were happy to price match the lower amount.
I then pointed out I could get £30 cashback through TCB ... but they couldn't price match that too!! So I just cancelled the renewal, and signed up via TCB as a brand new customer.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

Why renew with the AA at all?
If you read martins section on breakdown cover you can get the same cover for a fraction of the price with different companies.0 -
OMG - just called them and got the same cover down to £32 - a saving of £89!!!!!
Thank you!! :j0 -
I have just received my AA renewal membership through at £218 for my partner and myself with so called complimentary Stay Mobile. On looking at the AA web site as a new customer I could get the same, but without the Stay Mobile for £134. A substantial difference.
Phoned the AA hot line and pressed the button for 'customers thinking of leaving the AA' and suggested that I was going to cancel my membership after 40 years and go online as a new customer. They dropped my renewal to £122.
Satisfaction however I do feel I have not been valued as a long term customer.0 -
I just cancelled then renewed through quidco and it worked out about £60 for me and her indoors to have cover.Pretty good really.0

Our renewal came through at £162 (2 people, Roadside, Relay and "Complimentary" Home Start) I phoned and used the Thinking of Leaving the AA option. I said that I understood "Complimentary" to mean "Free" but on the website 2 people, Roadside, Relay was much cheaper - the renewal was reduced to £113.
I did try the main comparison sites and other breakdown companies (Green Flag, etc) websites but could not get a quote for the cover we get from the AA. Even though I was looking for personal cover as it was for 2 people you could only put in details for 2 vehicles but we have 3 vehicles. The AA seems to be the only one that for personal cover doesn't require the number of / type of vehicle(s) to be declared.0 -
It's quite normal nowadays for long term members or customers to be treated worse than new ones. The emphasis is on gaining new members/customers probably on the assumption that most long term ones will stay due to inertia. My wife and I have had a Natwest current account for over 50 years and I sometimes think that they ought to be grateful but I've seen no sign of it. Constant chopping and changing of accounts in search of the best deal must be tremendously costly in admin. for banks but they don't seem to care.0
