Annoying Phone Calls

I have been registered with the Telephone Preference Service for about 10 years. However, recently I have been getting some calls which are really annoying me. About 3 or 4 times a day the phone rings and as soon as I pick up the receiver the person calling disconnects the call. When I ring 1471 it says "we do not have the callers number to return the call".

Has anyone else been getting these calls, they are really driving me mad.

Yes - most of the population ! many of them come from abroad where the TPS isn't valid - apart from which, most of the domestic ones seem to ignore the TPS nowadays anyway.
Get an answerphone and screen your calls.............

These foreign calls are effectively rendering my 20 yr number useless. The TPS say if there is a British company associated with them they can do something. In practice it is very difficult to find out what company it is, even if the company exists I can't understand the accent. Nowadays I often wait until the caller speaks and if it is an Indian accent I hang up. Of course this could prevent a odd legitimate call, and many people wait of you answering which means you may miss an important call. At the moment I need to make sure I receive all calls. It is a serious problem

Another trick is for the salesperson to pretend to be carrying out a survey, if you then report them to the TPS they will say surveys are legal. How naive.

Since I retired and am at home a lot more, I reckon I get an average of 3 calls per day which are either a)silent or b)from "Wayne " in Bangalore !!! If I'm in the right mood then I'll just listen to the c**p without saying a word until they give up!!

I`m with Plusnet for my home phone, you can, if you pay for it (I think it`s about £6 a month which is a bit expensive) get Anonymous Call Reject which means those withholding their numbers can`t get through. They also offer a pay-for service which means you can put repetitive or annoying numbers you do get, on a ban list which stops those getting through. Due to finances I`ve had to let go both those services but when I had them they were great and really made a difference!

You can get the same thing with BT - the service is called 'Choose to refuse' - it can block the number even if you don't know what it was, by putting in a code, and selecting 'block last caller' as the option immediately just after they've rung you. There is a charge, but it does work - I used it in conjunction with TPS for about 5 years and I hardly ever get calls now.

    Thats sounds positive.
Have been getting these from UK Survey lately - number withheld and won't tell me what it is - I'm with TPS and so is elderly friend who keeps getting pestered.

Does the Choose to Refuse, or similar service, let you stop calls from abroad? I know they stop calls that are 'withheld' from phones in Britain but calls from abroad are often shown as 'Unavailable', and I'm not sure if these are included. BT will not block ALL calls from abroad - I've asked them.

I had a call from someone claiming to be doing a special survey in my postcode area. When I responded "What is my postcode, please" she couldn't tell me and got all flustered. I then hung up.

Yahoo. Had a phone call today at 12.25 to tell me I have won a cruise. Yippee - wonder where I'll go - Honolulu? Bermuda? Madeira? Rome? Can't wait!!! Only problem is that I haven't entered any competition to win a cruise!!! I wonder if it's a scam?

Can't wait for Flyboy152 to tell me it's all above board and how evil I am for doubting the poor company which is only trying to earn an honest living!
