I haven't seen any for ages then I've found 3 in the space of 10 days.

2 in the garden at dusk, which had to removed to a safe place away from my dogs & just out with said dogs I've found another, crossing a busy road in broad daylight

I've brought it home & it's just eaten half a can of whiskas, drunk a gallon of water & is now sat looking at me showing no fear at all. In fact when I went to pick it up it just looked up at me, didn't curl up or seem worried in any way!

I've had a good look & can't see any obvious injuries or, surprisingly, any ticks.. they're usually infested.

So I'll wait 'till dark & he/she can go with the others, well away from any road.

EDIT: Just had another look & he/she seems to have an eye problem, both very cloudy so it will be off to my local vet tomorrow & then Hedgepig rescue.

Hedgehogs, why can't they share the hedge?

    :D
  • Awwwww, I think hedgehogs have pretty terrible sight and rely on other senses to get around.

It's very unusual to see them out during the middle of the day and usually indicates something is wrong so it's worth having a check just to make sure (hard to tell from the pic but it doesn't look really skinny which is a good sign).

DM & DF found one wandering around their garden that was really underweight just before hibernation time last year - the "hedgehog people" came and got it and brought it (and a couple of others) back once they woke up in the spring. All were spread out over the garden (quite big) so they could have their own wee bit of territory.

Fingers crossed it goes OK tomorrow - please let us know.

Dropped him/her off at Stapeley Grange wildlife centre this morning.

I miss the little tyke already :) We started feeding it soaked cat biscuits last night & it ended up following my boy round so it could get another, he couldn't get rid of it (not that he wanted too) :)

I've never seen one so fearless!
