Do you have to remove coving before replastering a ceiling????

Hi There,
We have just bought a house and it has coving in every room... we quite like it
however what we don't like it the Artex... we have had it tested for asbestos and we are good to go to either remove it or skim it... we ideally wanted to keep the coving but neither of us knew if you had to remove the existing coving before replastering the ceiling? Is there a way that we could just protect the existing coving (or am I just being optmistic??)
Any help would be much appreciated!!!!
Kindest Regards

it should be alright to leave in place , your plasterer should wipe over any mess..... sorted0

You can bond and skim over artex if the pattern isn't too 'deep' and you don't need to remove the coving. The only thing you have to bear in mind is that you will lose a bit of the 'quirk' on the coving. How much depends on how thick your plasterer slaps the skim on.
The other option is to get your plasterer to remove the artex before they skim it over the ceiling. That way you don't lose the 'quirk' as much. An easy way to remove the artex is to use a steam stripper to soften it up before it's scrapped off, this makes it go all 'soft and bendy' for lack of a better phrase and is a lot easier to remove.0 -
Make sure the high spots on the artex are scraped back and ask the plasterer to keep the skim thin around the coving edge.Done this on my ceilings and they were fine, you would not know the coving was not removed before plastering0
