ahh marellous - the moon seems to be effecting the "usual suspects" in the manner it normally does - hopefully this thread will survive the "temporary derailing" that happens occassionally ;-)

When my sister found that rat traps etc just weren't doing it (she won't put down poison because of the animal food chain) she got an air rifle and taught herself to shoot with it. You don't need a license and can kill small beings if you are close enough. I'm sure that it would work for pigeons, and I have considered it myself as I seem to feed a lot on my bird table but as I'm in a city back to back I didn't think that it would go down too well when I was practising! However if the seagulls get any bolder I may rethink that (not to eat, I understand that seagull meat is none too pleasant, would aim to deter them and maybe eat wood pigeons that I am unintentionally fattening)

Last year I found a walnut tree in a city park (was alerted by squirrels eating the nuts and spitting out bits of green fleshy outer coating).
I tried making walnut ketchup in August when I found them but think that they may not have been green enough as the shell was nearly fully formed inside when I chopped them up. I think that right now is a little late for green walnuts for pickling, ketchup and dye, but a month or so early for nuts as you can't store them until they fall from the tree and the outer husk slits ready to come off of it's own accord. The only thing is that waiting for the latter stage means that you have to hope that squirrels don't get the lot first, unless you can net the tree.

    Evening all :)

OK... I know that it often takes a while for people to catch up and for the rumblings of a erm... lively discussion, to die down; but it's time to draw a line under this one.

The topic in hand is the one on the title of this page.

Had a sudden thought - rachbc and ceridwen are you related at all? I only ask because you seem to have a very similar writing style.

ha ha If you read my other posts you notice the use of quotation marks was ironic - though I guess thats impossible to convey in a single post!

I am actually rather offended as my views are very very far removed from those I'm being compared with

You can eat any bird meat, but seabirds need to be soaked in copious amounts of water or they taste fishy and over salty, they're also quite greasy birds. Also, as with wild birds like duck, they should be eaten as soon as possible so the fat in them doesn't get a chance to turn rancid.

Apart from that they're fine! :D

How do you know?????? Have you tried one? I guess the ones by the sea would taste better than those on an inner city tip  :D.

Yes, I've eaten gull meat, it isn't great and wouldn't be my first choice but if ye were starving.... ;)
I've also eaten seal meat and didn't like it, so wouldn't do that again.
