It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Taurus - hope all is ok, I notice you haven't posted here or on Facebook? Everything crossed for you.
Reverbe - I sweat the veg in some form of fat at the start- supposed to bring the flavour out. Butter if we have enough
kidcat - I looked at the big brands thing too, but as they sell £20 RRP for £1 couldn't actually see the point of the free stuff. I would rather spend the pound on something I do want/need.
I have been slowly converted to Lidl/Aldi - helps that ours are opposite each other and I do tend to go into both.
The fresh yeast has made the best loaf of bread yet. Well worth asking for it in the big supermarkets if you go.
ETA Forgot to say I love the squashes - must try growing those next year. I have tried butternut before without any success which puts me off.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0 -
Im always having to answer scientific or philosophical type questions for my youngest DS so searched the web as to why milk turns sour during thundery weather
Also Grey Queen I love Turks Turban Squash and always buy one for my Halloween decorations and then roast it afterwards.
Things are getting tough for me personally so its a time to batten down the hatches I think xI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -

Thank you for the welcome HariboJunkie! Four former lurkers have 'come out' this afternoon thanks to you.
I am very pleased with myself - just bought a pot of coriander and bag of flat leaf parsley - for 10p each!! :j To be used in white sauce for chicken and ham pie (kids are meat-eaters) and in a veggie pie of some description for me - whatever I can find tomorrow really - I think I have some walnuts somewhere so that could be nice in a sauce with some strong cheese and some finely chopped broccoli stalks.
My local W'rose closes at 7pm on a Sat eve so if you go down and lurk around at 6.30pm you can pick up some bargains. Rock 'n' roll!! :rotfl:
Though I did slightly spoil it by buying a Jack Hawkins tomato for £1  Sorry but I just couldn't resist it and I justify it to myself by thinking that at least it wasn't sweets or chocolate.*If you have nothing nice to say... say nothing*"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Thanks Seakay and 7 WW I do prefer not to use Tesco (as a company i just don't like them) so I shall try Morrisons as we've had one open local ish. I've got a lot of rice now so that's the next on the list. I use Aldi & lidl for different things. Peeled and chopped tomatoes from Aldi based on taste. I tend to shop on a weekly basis when my boys are at their social group but a different shop each time across the month. That added to farm shop for fresh meat & veg keeps us ticking over. If you're not fussy on fresh/quality Iceland cooked frozen chicken portions have been a good fall back for us as we go through a lot of chicken & occasionally run out.
Can I have a plot on the island too please? I'm sure we could all contribute something & have a fairly cashless society, how blissful does that sound?
Kittie we're away in Leyburn, north Yorkshire, it's hit here pretty bad but thankfully the caravan/camp site slopes downwards towards a stream which is where the water from the hills has almost all headedOne day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -

What is a Jack Hawkins tomato? Can you save the seeds and grow your own next year?0 -
Well, my lovely new freezer arrived today and it is in its new home with the lid open for 12 hours. Then it gets switched on for 24 hours and THEN I get to use it. It seems a long wait but I'm determined to follow the instructions to the letter, especially after chatting with the rather knowledgeable delivery man who told me what best practice was - which largely coincided with what I researched.
Somehow its arrival/planning for its position has triggered a bout of switching furniture around and I'm v pleased with the result. My knocked through front room/back room now has separate "zones" for dining, office, lounging and meditating, but also works as a whole with no difficult to get to/use bits. I'm especially pleased that the office bit is sited so that it will be much warmer for surfing in winter.
I also now know what style of stuff I want and which pieces will be staying and which will be changed - as and when finances and the availability of bargains allow of course
Still a long way to go, but it already seems a nicer and more useable space.
Mind you, I'll pay tomorrow - getting out of bed is going to be quite the physical challenge methinks :rotfl::rotfl:
On the island - I'm a very good grower of anything squash related - even when my butternut squash turn out to be buttercup squash . Never mind, they've got a rave write up and they are incredibly prolific. They are supposed to store well too so for now I'm letting the plants produce all the fruit they want. My grape vine is also doing well and I do make my own wine - will that get me a plot?
Right, off now to get a heat pad for my back and perhaps a glass or wine, or two ...:D
