It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

I'd like to have a play with a kindle, just to see what it was like, but right now I don't really need or want one. The library is so good I very seldom buy books, and the things I like to read are either very expensive on the kindle, or simply not available. Plus I'm clumsy as hell and don't need anything else in the house I can break, I can drop books and get away with it.

I had a glut of reduced yellow peppers, so have duly sliced, diced and frozen them ready. And also quite a few apples. I stewed and froze the ones that were past their best, fancy making some sort of apple/custard crumble tart thingys at some point. Don't need any more sweet things at the mo, MIL brought some lemon curd muffins round directly after I'd made a carrot cake.

Reading British news makes me shudder. What happens with you guys tends to hit us as some point or another, even in a reduced way. I'm just not sure how much further I can make everything stretch.... I know I can and will have to, but sometimes it's a pain in the bum to get mentally prepared that way. And of course I'm worried for my parents, still there in England and dealing with it, and the rest of you guys on here.

Sending love and virtual carrot cake to anyone who fancies it (no calories that way).

Chilly but dry and calm today, is nice to get rid of that wind. Might even get some washing out if I can remember how you do that :)
Somebody posted this on another forum, might be interesting.

I must admit alot of my kindle knowledge is more knowing what it's capable of rather than knowing exactly how to do it. Apparently you can swop books between kindles - i can send a book i've purchased from mine to yours if i know [STRIKE]it's[/STRIKE] (grr i'm rubbish with its and it's) its name, which begs another question "how do you find its name?"

I have a day off today and OH and i are going house hunting for investment purposes as we feel our pension pot will be better in property than in the banks. At least the Greeks can't have it then - or not directly anyway. At least it will be nice to spend a day together with no kids - might even get a bit of lunch out. I'm working tomorrow tho - university open day, i've never done one in 14 years so it's about time i did.

I'm really proud of how i've reduced my shopping bill - at one point i was spending £600 a month  for 4 of us. But by shopping around the supermarkets, and picking round the brands, making use of "buy 1 get 2 free" offers and virually eliminating waste (there is the odd bit of slimy salad that escapes me), i have nearly halved it. Although sometimes we do have "freezer surprise" for tea :rotfl:

The news is depressing, the weather is depressing but i am keeping smiling - that'll pee the b*ggers off! :D

I was thinking. :D ....Remember way back early in the year the Icelandic volcano that disrupted flights... there were links online to past years this had happened and how it always caused famine in Scotland. There were years called things like "the year of no summer" etc. It might be this that has caused us to have no fruit and no berries , and not just the weather ?

My rosehip bushes this year are full, but the blackcurrants had nothing! Summer, of course, has been another washout up this way and that makes two years on the trot where it's been hard to grow food. Crops that should have been fine just didn't happen thanks to too much wind, cold and wet. :(
The economy is scaring the bejaysus out of me, frankly. :(

VJ - Your Kindle's name can be found in settings, under 'Device Name'. If you have registered it on Amazon it's there too. It will be something like 'VJ's Kindle'. HTH :)

Anybody see the news about Moody downgrading the RBS and Lloyds?
