It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Hope this is in the right place.
Please can anyone give me a link to a knitting pattern (plain knitting, I can't do fancy stitches) for a neck warmer for winter? I have scarves but was thinking for wearing in the house, a neck warmer would be more practical and not trail in anything!"Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -
Good morning all.
Yesterday was a blur but I got over to see SuperGran just before 5 pm; the fitters had been there 8am until 4 pm and she has the most swanky new tank you can imagine. Trouble is, it it soooo huge that it cost the single shelf of the airing cupboard. What to do?
We had a wee discussion. There a handful of flats in this block which have a different layout and are a bit bigger and her's is one of them, but broadly speaking, our cupboards are the same. When I moved in, I converted the 2-foot-wide cupboard alongside the tank cupboard (which being almost 80% occupied by tank in mine and 95% occupied now in her's) into the airing cupboard. It has hot pipes going thru it and works very well.
Mum put me 4 slatted shelves made of salavaged pine, mostly 1 x 2 plus some thinner but broader bits from a wombled cloth-covered wardrobe. Anyway, got head-to-head with Mum and she and I will search the sheds at home and see if we can do the same over at SG's without spending any money. She's thrilled at the prospect.
Poorly Mr Beko is now switched off for the Bank Holiday weekend as I'm going straight from work to Mum and Dad's and will see my Nan and......and.......go to a bootsale and convert a Tesco voucher or two in the exchange this weekend. What a glamorous life I lead but hey, I'm happy.
MrsVP very pleased to hear that there was nothing grievous found on your husband's appt.
Charis, thanks for the site; by co-incidence Mr Google had come up with that one, too, isn't it great? I shall now have to shop mid-Sept as have lots to do next week before going on holiday and can't factor anything else in. I'll be looking for A++ rating to keep the futility bills down.
Right, gotta run, stuff to do. Hope everyone has a good day and that someone has the sun because it is p*ssing down here and has been since I was woken up at 4 am and probably before that.

Well, today I am in much pain with my back. I am also pretty shattered and was in bed by 9 last night. Feeling very grumpy but at least I am down to one hag at work as the other one has the day off! :-)
Had to throw out so much food as I havent had chance to do anything with it. I am never bloody in!!! Not happy.0 -
Kittie, SuperGran is a lovely lady, almost the same age as my Mum, and does so much for other people in the community and in our neighbourhood, that it is a pleasure to do anything for her.
She has been the soul of kindness to me for many years and is almost a second Mum. Last winter, when I had to have a surgery and had to present myself at the hospital at 7 am, SG drove me several miles in the iciest black ice you can imagine, to get there. The car doors froze up and we needed help at the other end to exit the car, that is how bad the weather was.
Her many kindnesses to me personally are too many to enumerate. No to mention the ones which I know she has done for others, often complete strangers, new people who move into the block and are destitute of even the most basic belongings. This morning, she has taken temporary custody of a carton of eggs and a block of cheese to keep in her fridge until after the weekend, Mr Beki being soooo poorly that I have turned him off at the wall.
 I have just gone to J Lewis to get a new zip for my work trousers as the existing one is on it's way out and they don't stock that size. Arrrggghhhh, I so badly miss the demise of the haberdashers. A good haberdasher, like a good ironmononger, is a joy and a treasure.

What size and colour? At home, I have a box of brand new (and "wombled") zips that I can go through and might have one that fits the bill.‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ David Lynch.

I have a tummy bug and feel blee; oh well, it could be worse - at least this will be a no-spend day! Also received a letter in the post this morning, which I opened without looking as I assumed it would be for me - a natural assumption since I'm the only one here! Turned out to be for a person I've never heard of who had given my address. It was from a debt collection agency for an unpaid subscription to a !!!!!! site for a couple of hundred pounds  Needless to say, I have e-mailed them to let them know this person is not known at my address! I don't know if they'll believe me, but I expect they get a lot of people giving false names and addresses for these websites or for anything really if they have no intention to pay.
Mrs Veg Plot, glad you enjoyed the link. There are some really kind and honest people in the world and we need to read about them to offset the news about the horrible ones!
I hope I am better tomorrow - I'm supposed to be on a carnival float, dressed as a teapot :rotfl:and throwing teabags into the crowd!Aspire not to have more but to be more.
