It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Agree it seems more like September. I've got "that feeling" that is making me want to forage, nest and snuggle down. I'm blooming sure I used to be a squirrel.
Spoilt my street cred yesterday. Looking respectable, complete with silly high heeled shoes, and spotted a hazel tree hanging over the car park. I said I was having 10 minutes of the hypothetical lunch break, and was later found in the middle of the tree, bouncing up and down with a carrier bag over my arm. Got a decent haul. I'm ripening them indoors, and then I'm going to take the frilly bit off the nut and store them in glass jars to munch through the winter. Promised to take grandkids at weekend to forage, so may get some more and possibly blackberries.
I know it is still supposed to be summer, but I love this autumny feeling. I must be a throwback - parents are complete opposites of me.
Errr...there is a snag to this - I cant find any evidence anywhere that hazelnuts will continue to ripen if removed from the tree...and I've just googled asking and the replies were uniformly that they have to be left on the tree to ripen.0 -
Thanks for the good wishes, I visited dentist today and its infected again, means I now have two more sets of antibiotics, one is so strong I have to go back tomorrow to check they aren't upsetting me. Good news is that dentist must have had some feedback from hospital from last time and is going to take out the tooth next week rather than making me wait for next available appointment in Sept!!
This whole thing is costing a fortune, gonna have to.seriously cut back somewhere else.
No blackberries here at all yet but have got oh looking when he walks dog.
Jedi hope your little one gets through this quickly, as for holiday we usually go for a caravan holiday and usually stick to the big names, but last yr left it too late so went for a smaller family run site instead which I.would def recommend. Cheaper friendlier and just more relaxing.0 -
Memory Girl - I'd love to see the piccy but unfortunately I can't see it through your link or by going direct to the website

Ceridwen, I have done it before, albeit with just a few. Also had a good google and apparently the main thing is to keep them airy. Worth a try anyway, but I think they will be OK. I saw where someone said they would only ripen on the tree, but found some others that say you can.
Don't dispute they are better ripened on the tree, but unfortunately I'm not built for speed like the squirrels.0 -

(I was so hoping it wasn't the case)but how wonderful that the dentist is making it a priority next week and not drawing out your suffering. Very best wishes for next week and I hope the antibiotics bring some relief in the meantime as they attack the infections.

Hello:D
I keep meaning to post regularly on this thread but am still only up to page 167 of the thread previous to the last one:o Have only just made ChocClaire's delicious Chinese chicken this week [with leftover chicken and sauce reappearing as soup last night:D]
Unfortunately tomorrow is my last day of paid employment tomorrow [redundancy] I have a holiday coming up and then shall start "actively seeking work" [that phrase already grates] when I get home. Meanwhile I am filling out surveys and am nearing my first voucher threshold on two...it provides a small funding stream whilst I am looking and makes me feel more in control. I am looking upon this experience as a positive one and a chance to make more lifestyle changes.
Hoped that perhaps this site might have something of interest in the meantime whilst I slink back off into lurkdom

Should I interpret that as "ceridwen - betcha you've got a tree book or two on your shelves?:rotfl:".
Yep..three of them. Try this one:

Am so pleased to have my family(and much loved family dog) over for their dinner tomorrow:jsince I live alone,it's always such a pleasure to cook-especially for greedy 6ft.4ins nephews!
I have plenty of stock for soup and will al;so have baked potatoes in my remoska, also plan to make a beef stew for nephew, and a risotto for self and sister from some chicken bits and pieces.Any left overs will feed me over weekend.I hope!:D
Have been lucky enough to have enjoyed 2 days of lovely weather-just sitting in the communal back green in a deckchair-but such a pleasure to watch the birds peck away and play with the 2 tots from the flat below me,also to read and knit.Very stress relieving from the sometimes unbearable pressures of my job,and although I have no formal faith, I genuinely give thanks that I'm blessed to have so many small pleasures in my day that gives me a sense of purpose and quiet joy.
Am knitting some hand warmers for the winter -see knit your square thread- and find the sense of rhythm very therapeutic.
Just off now to put on Radio 4 and get chopping some veg for tomorrow.
May I offer my positive prayers and bubbles of pleasure for all those who would like to have them as I chop, sing(very badly) and light my nightly candle:AWe are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.Oscar Wilde xxx:A0 -
