Things to do in/near Wrexham

I'm going up to Wrexham for the National Eisteddfod next week. We won't be spending all of our time there so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of activities/ interesting things to do in the area?

Chester is only 15 minutes up the bypass and has lots of history, museums, etc. Also lots of shopping for mum!0
