What will happen to people on SDA?

Sorry to ask but I know Severe Disablement Allowance was stopped to new claimants in 2001 but I heard it will completely be stopped to existing claimants in the next couple of years.

What benefit will it become?

I believe peopke will be migrated to ESA, however, the migration seems complex and everyone will need to undergo a medical assessment before being transferred - there is more information here.

  • ESA is means tested
    SDA is not

The government promise that if you are eligible for [means tested] ESA your SDA payment will be frozen, which could mean if you are eligible for 1p of ESA you will get the full SDA amount.

Does this mean that where the carer is working the statuary permitted hours, couples could get nothing??

As I understand it, both SDA and ESA (income related) are means tested.

The permitted work rules are broadly similar, as I understand it, and the income for permitted work does not count.

I believe what this refers to is unearned income - for example pension contributions.
This means that if you have a pension of 99 pounds, you might only have a pound of ESA payable, for example.

SDA _is_ as I understand it means tested. It's just that permitted work is ignored, as it is with ESA.
Please note - I'm not very sure of the SDA conditions.
