Screwed over by Santander, phone number needed

Hi,

I wrote to Santander to (successfully!) reclaim bank charges about six weeks ago and when the charges were refunded they told me (in writing) that I would incur no further charges on the account until August as a goodwill gesture.

This morning £100 has been taken from my account in charges! I would write back to them, with a photocopy of their letter to me, to get it sorted, but I'm going on holiday in a couple of days so I really need that £100 ASAP.

The charges did show as due to be taken on my statement, but I was told on my letter I had off them that charges would be shown but would not be debited.

Does anyone have a contact number for them, other than the foreign call center? I've phoned them and they just tell me that they themselves cant do anything and to contact whoever wrote to me, but they won't give me a contact number.

Thanks, been on the phone to them and they've told me they can't refund anything unless I respond to the letter in writing. They've taken a phone number and said they will call me back once they've looked into it further but it doesn't sound too hopeful. £100 down on my holiday money

Put a complaint into the CEO if they dont give you this money back, they sent you a letter saying they would not take anymore charges.
You should not have to write a letter and grovel for something that they have said they will do.
Also ring the complaints line again and put a complaint regarding this fiasco.

Emailed the CEO and written a letter to the same address I used last time. Hopefully I'll hear back sooner rather than later.
  • I really am at me wits end about this.

In June 2008 (I bet u can guess why!) I transferred my banking account to Halifax. My big mistake was leaving £500 with Santander instead of closing the whole thing.

Things then went v v wrong.

S managed to pay all direct debits/standing orders despite authorisation re change of account so Halifax in debit.

Umpteen emails/tel calls/visits all seemed OK tho no formal apology/compensation of any sort. Going thru redundancy at time so no energy to argue.

In Feb 2011, as complaints re S increased, decided had better withdraw all cash. 2 branches later, horrified to find account in debit rather than credit + account transferred to collection agency!!

It took me a while to find out what had happened - S had not transferred some direct debits/standing orders to Halifax + that took me into overdraft (despite there not being an overdraft facility on the account) + then kept on until I reached the "collection agency" time limit. I didn't know of this as they hadn't taken a note of my change of address. Even now, depending on who I speak to they have/have't despite a few letters, including those from debt collectors reaching me.

Now, some 6 months on, dozens and dozens of tel calls later, receipt of letters from debt collection agency + even lengthy visit to another branch (to be fair to manager there, she was stunned but even she had no success contacting them), I still don't have my cash, each tel call has me explaining the matter from scratch - they never seem to be able to find info from numbers + each person assuring me it willl be "dealt with".

Today's has especially sent me nuts as she said matter had been "resolved" - i.e. they're right + I'm wrong + owe them money + the last person had sent a letter stating this (he hadn't) . I asked if anyone had looked at the form where I authorised the transfer of EVERYTHING to the Halifax - they hadn't.

I really, really am at a loss as to how to deal with this. I have now been out of work for 2 1/2 years + am disabled + really need this money. Even worse, my credit rating has now been trashed so, even if I get a job offer, it'll be withdrawn because of this.

If anyone can help/have any suggestions, wld be grateful. Am v sorry re length of this but ....................
  • Hi there,
I have had nothing but trouble from Santander, I had a reward current account with them and in December 2010 went into my branch to withdraw money as for some reason they put a stop on my account (still to this day do not no why) I was told yeah take all your money we're closing your account.
To cut a long story short they never closed the account, the monthly fee for the account was still being charged putting me overdrawn which I only discovered in May of this year as had been out of the country. My credit rating shows I've defaulted on this account.
Sent them a letter as I'm so angry wanting them to sort out what information they've put on my credit file and demanding compensation as I can't get any credit now!!
Does anyone think I'll get anything worth while from complaining to them???

your better telling them in writing about your senario and informing them you wish to take the complaint to the finicial services authoitty as for contact from the number try this number 01908238013 its their e banking part just choose opton 3 then it will connect you to the 0845 number more cheaper (free if you have a mobile on contract with minuites ect)

The best thing also if they offer you a 25 quid goodwill charge is NOT accept it! just further then you have the right to contact the FSA

hope you get it sorted out

    From the FSA site:
...Firms regulated by us must have a procedure in place to resolve disputes with their customers.
It’s always best to contact the firm to ask them to put things right. However, there are options if you are not satisfied with its response...

As irishmarky1 does not seem to have exhausted this route yet, my suggestion is start there.
Going anywhere else first is only likely to delay matters further whilst they suggest you follow that route first.
