dfw's in my situation would you buy a passport...

i was supposed to be going abroad for the first time in april... but many things are putting me off... one of the biggest is the price... if i go away i will not hit my target (for the year) and also it would all need to be paid by the end of january  anyways do i not bother to go this year or do i buy a passport and hope for a late deal nearer the time? shrug.gif... we went to a travel agents today for a quote (what spoilt my day) and they wanted to send us out of season to a quite area for £600pp :o then when we asked if we could take the quote she said she booked it :o well we walked out... anyways i would prefer a devon holiday but mums set in taking me abroad... what would you do? buy a passport or wait and use that as an excuse? shrug.gif

  • Well the price of a passport isn't going to change and you can't leave the UK without one so you may as well get one and then have the choice.

Saying that I have a passport which is still in my maiden name as I refuse to pay them £60 to change my surname

  • I would get a passport, but I would NEVER book a holiday through a travel agent - that's what the internet is for!

You say you would prefer a Devon holiday, but it does sound to me as if you are looking forward to going abroad for the first time - and an 'abroad' holiday can be much cheaper than a UK one (which is generally a big problem for the UK economy!)

If you did the internet searching, found a holiday your mum liked abroad much cheaper than you'd been quoted by the agent, might your mum contribute something towards your passport? ;)

How about a citybreak in Europe as a compromise? I booked OH and I 4 days/3 nights in Rome going on Valentines day (Xmas and 40th Bday pressie for him) and it was £180 each in a good, central hotel (incl breakfast), incl flights, insurance and airport parking.

  • Get the passport and look for a better deal on the net. Going independently will always be cheaper than a travel agent.

Try lastminute.com for last minute holidays, or teletext.co.uk! (Or look at Martin's helpful list). If you don't book until just before you travel, they can't demand payment before you book! :D These sites are bound to have SOMETHING, even if you book the day before you go.... and you can have fun looking in advance. There are likely to be loads of holidays for less than £100 each unless you hit the Easter holidays, and even then you should be able to find something for around £200 each on the Mediterranean somewhere...
