Customer compliance interview - incorrect information from Inland Revenue

I was recently called for a customer compliance interview as I'm in receipt of income support and there was a 'query' on my claim. I was asked to clarify my circumstances and shown something which had my name and address on it, and showed I had received several hundred pounds in interest. It was not true, and although I did have an account with that building society I had forgotten about, it only had several hundred pounds in it. I went to the building society and asked them to identify the account, they could not, and said it did not seem to relate to one of their accounts (the first four digits should relate to the branch it was opened at), though the number of digits were the same.
My question is, paranoid I may be, but would the dwp or Inland Revenue provide fake account information in order to trigger an interview?

How do people with so little income that they have to claim off the state, suddenly "forget" about accounts with hundreds of pounds in?
D70How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?0 -
It's been recorded as a clerical error, which it obviously is, though it caused me a lot of worry as they were all mysterious about it and not giving anything away. No further action will be taken as I haven't done anything wrong. As for 'forgetting' the account, it happens. And as the saying says, 'just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you'.0
