    gumtree.

depends a bit on the area of the country though.
  • Found ours on gumtree. the land lord also advertised with agents but preferred dealing with tenants directly to save agency costs. It allowed us to negotiate rent down too.

I don't - Local paper and a few cards in Newsagent's and Post Office windows, and our phone didn't stop ringing!

We saw a few recently that were advertising on Rightmove through a company called Visum (?) or something like that. It put me off a bit when we called as the office is based in Norwich (I think ...) and they seem to just take your details and pass them on to the landlord. However, what put us off was that the landlord then called us back at 10.30 on a weeknight - a really odd time to call and it made us a bit worried about how professional he was going to be.

  • Rightmove.

Both mine came from local newspaper. Lots of landlords don't use the internet and even if they do for other things, they still go to the local paper to let houses. I've also seen ads in the village shop window, often 2 or 3 at a time.

If you want to use the internet because you want to rent in another area, you could take out a 3 month subscription to the local paper for that area. I've done that too.

Thank you everywhere for your answers.

We're looking in 4 different counties so I was just wondering how we could search properties without trying to get hold of their local newspapers.

    Rightmove.

I tried this and got no response. An estate agent got a tenant quickly though. Left it on rightmove through the company and only got 1 call - just before the posting was due to expire so not sure it was genuine.

I suspect that most people in the area (Sutton, Surrey) go to estate agents to find out what's available.

I am looking for private landlords as well, if possible ones that are in it just for the investment and not renting out a house they love and check on every day. We rented before and had a good landlord investor and found him through the newspaper and a big sign on the building (it was a flat)

This time round I have tried Gumtree, but up to now have had no luck. All I seem to get is bogus replies, scams and/or 'odd' replies. We are not too keen on paying the charges some agencies ask for as well.

We are not looking to move for a few months yet though so have time to look around. I just wish there was a big forum that they all posted their properties on, would make things much easier.

    Good luck.
