facebook making it hard to delete messages

anyone who has facebook, go to your inbox and select view archive at the bottom, and you will see all your past chats and conversations, emails etc possibly from many years ago.

the only way to delete these are to go into each and every conversation, click actions, then delete message, then delete all, then confirm....

this is ridiculous, surely they could have a 'delete archive' option or is there some reason they want to keep hold of our old data?

Maybe they think that you would like to keep all your past posts? I know that some people like to have a record of what they've said and to whom...

It's not too much of a problem if you 'delete as you go'. :)

ok but tell me why is there no easy way of deleting the archive?

when people delete messages they think they are gone but they are just moved to the archive.

then when you look at the archive you see years worth of messages. and you have to click and open each one and click another 3 times to delete it fully!!

    madness... big brother... unwanted feature..

I agree - it is a bit mad.

Have you tried this (from FB assistance):

"What’s the difference between archiving a conversation and deleting a conversation from Messages?
Archiving a conversation will hide it from your messages view, while deleting a conversation from Messages permanently removes the entire conversation and its history.

To archive a conversation, simply click the "x" next to the conversation. The conversation’s history will be preserved, and you will still be able to find it later. If the same person sends you a new message later, the archived conversation will reappear, and the new message will be added to it.

To permanently delete a conversation from your messages, simply open the conversation, then select "Delete Messages..." from the Actions drop-down menu.

If you click "Delete All" at the bottom of the page, the full conversation history will be permanently cleared from your messages. You can also check the boxes next to individual messages and click "Delete Selected" to permanently delete parts of the conversation.
    "?

    Good luck! xx

You might also be interested to know that when you think you are closing your Facebook account, it isn't really closed - just de-activated. Your details are still held in the Facebook files ("in case you decide that you made a mistake and want to re-open the account" according to Facebook).

    If you visit :
    http://www.stevenmansour.com/writings/2007/jul/23/2342/2504_steps_to_closing_your_facebook_account
and scroll past the opening twaddle and bad language, you will see the problems that the person concerned had in actually getting Facebook to remove his records from their system.

It seems that if you de-activate your account and then after a few days try to log on to it to make sure that it has gone, then you re-activate it!

If you have a Facebook account and are thinking of closing it down because things have become a little too personal, it is well worth reading this webpage - and Googling for similar ones.
