How to Empty a house?

We've just exchanged and will be completing on Friday :j

We've bought a house through a private sale and one of the agreements early on was we would take on the furniture etc to save them clearing it (her mum went into a home and she's removed personal stuff but was very upset about the thought of 'binning' furniture). We even got a discount on the price for this :)

But we've now realised what the heck do we do with it? It's all dated and yes we know some of it could be worth something, but we just want it gone! Lol

We have a big selection of wardrobes, drawer units, dressers and 3 beds!

We have a very large hire van on moving day so we could use this to move it out, but where too?

Our local tip won't accept hire vans *end of* and all the local charity organisations won't take it because it doesn't comply to fire safety regulations...

Any tips guys? We'll obviously be willing to pay a small amount but we'd be happy if someone came to take it all and then sell it and keep the cash!

If I were in your position I would probably post an ad on Gumtree listing what they can have - and that it is free.

You may find some people desperate for anything they can get or there might be someone who wants to sell on for a profit.

They have a "Freebies" section in the "For Sale" bit - or you could have a browse through the "Stuff Wanted" area.

    Good luck for the move!

Register with your local freecycle/freegle groups and as soon as you have moved in you can offer all the stuff on there. Although its not an instant solution it may take a week or two...but it does find good homes for things rather than the tip.

try freecycle it, there should be somebody who needs furniture but cannot afford to buy them. They should happily take them from you

I would expect beds to be refused, but local charities to take other furniture.......Salvation Army.....Housing Projects etc.

If you have somewhere to store it for a few days, Freecycle will normally shift anything, even beds.

Otherwise there are firms that clear houses. Anything older can go to an auction room.

I have also seen people in my town leave a yard full of unwanted furniture outside with a sign to 'help yourself to free furniture'! If you're moving somewhere that has plenty of people walking past, and the weather is good then that might be worth a try! One Christmas Day my Aunty was short of table space for 22 lunch guests and I'd walked past a yard on the way there that just happened to have a table in it amongst other things!

Womens Aid, is often a good place to ask, they may have women who are in a refuge after doing a runner and are grateful for anything from a toothbrush to a three piece suite.

try the local authority recycling department. They'll give you links to a local charity that will be glad to take furniture regardless of the fire reg 'stuff'. Our local one is 'Homemakers' and they do full house clearances, and then those who are less fortunate, are able to buy good quality stuff for starter homes and flats at a massively reduced rate.
    Bern :j
  • you should try looking up house clearance companies in your area (there are loads in Scotland, imagine there would be the same in England?)

They will come and take everything away for you will usually pay you some cash (depending on the condition of it)as they will be selling it on again in their shops.

Anything they do not take, there are companies who will come and take it away to dispose of it, they do charge, but you can get a few quotes and see which is cheapest.

Alternatively, you could impress your new neighbours with a bonfire in the garden.
