replacement windows?? help!

Hiya,
I need new upvc windows in my house, I know nothing about replacement windows and doors and I'm petrified of being ripped off, I've already had trouble with the Plumber, dampproofer, electrician and a close shave with a creepy safestyle salesman who wanted to hug me (urghh)... I don't know how much more i can take to be honest.

--Are there any good advice guides i could read on the net?
--how do you find a reputable firm?
--can anyone recommend anyone?

I'm in Bolton and i live in a terraced house.

First of all, not all of them are rip off merchants as long as you are vigilant.

Get three quotes from pretty local companies (stay away from the biggies, they are overpriced, just see what kind of cars their reps drive)

Ask for references of other people they have worked for and take them up on it. Ring the people up first and ask if you can go and see the work.

Get quotes, not estimates. There is a big difference.

Make sure you get like for like quotes on all of them.

We had ours done last year and it went like a dream, but the comany we used was in Wakefield, West Yorks otherwise I would have highly recommended them.
