How to build up a cat?

Hi, as some of you may know, my little baby has recently been in the vets with some severe problems (she's 14). She seems to be fine now, with the exception that she still doesn't weigh much. She will eat, but not much, and having given her some Tesco's sachet's of food, these have proven to have been a bit too rich for her, and upset her tummy.

When she came out of the vets, they gave me some tinned food to build her up, which she did eat, but that costs so much, and we've already spent £713 on her vets treatment. My question is, how can I encourage her to eat more, and build her back up again? What types of food should I use? At the moment, she has Royal Canine's Sensitive 33 for Cats. Can I use chicken?

cat food is full of preservatives and chemicals because it is made of stinking festering rotten meat, the preservatives kill the bacteria, but some animals with low resistance have an intolerance to the dead bacteria cells.
Try the cat on some tinned fish, Tuna, Mackerel and see how she goes.
It is closer to what a cat would eat in the wild .
We forget, Dog/ Cat food is a still new thing, we had pets long before we had tinned animal food, they lived just as long and as happy.

  • Thank you for replying. Would fresh fish do just as well? Will try the tinned stuff today, and see how she goes. Just want to give her the best.:D

Another Tip is, often last thing the Deli counter marks down cooked Chicken and things, you can often pick up a cooked breast for a few pence, again, broken up with some mixer makes a good meal for the cat and it can be less than the cost of a tin of cat food.
Try her on a few things, she's your baby, look after her.

  • A treat of some liver or kidney wouldn't go amiss occasionally, either. A lamb kidney is about 30p in the butchers and will do a couple of snacks - depends on the particular cat if they want bloody or well done.

A teaspoon of oil in meals - check out the BARF diet, as they eat far less because the food is more nutrient dense. Now she is a bit old to be changed to raw chicken wings all the time - but soem of the general principles are sound.

But don't forget that not all food is ideal as a sole diet - so variety might be the key here.

My old girl had thyroid problems (it was removed about 2 years ago) and she had become nothing but skin and bone. Every time I went in the kitchen she got something, whether it was her tablet in a blob of pate, a bit of ham, cheese, chicken, beef, prawns, cat food, fish...I would get out the chair and she would already have thrown herself at the fridge door and was trying to climb in.

Anyway, after quite a long time of this, chopping and changing her food so she was constantly stimulated by the difference (she is a smart cat who becomes a criminal genius when hungry), and she got her weight back up within about 9 months. Although that could be due in part to her helping herself to fish flakes when nobody was looking!
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
