Hi
I would like to repaint my stairs and skirting. Previously oil painted gloss that has now yellowed (painted 11 years ago).
Having used the new paints (latex?) both gloss(ronseal diamond hard) and satin(crown) I am really disappointed with smooth coverage and toughness.
Can I get oil based satin or eggshell in white? Also will I need to prime/undercoat?
Any suggestions appreciated.

dulux do a oil / solvent based satinwood , doesn't require any undercoat over previously painted surfaces , the also do a water based version which is very good , diamond satinwood , i guess it depends on the wear and tear as to how long paint looks good , the water based paints don't tend to yellow as much as solvent based0

Hi can you tell me which Dulux one? I can only find the 'wash your brushes in water' type lol.
I am also a wee bit wary having seen this .
I need a really hardwaring paint tbh as like most people my hallway and stairs take a lot of stick!Greyer by the minute - Older by the hour - Wiser by the day0 -
this is the solvent based one http://www.duluxdecoratorcentre.co.uk/servlet/ProductHandler?code=DDC10024&submit.x=50&submit.y=5
probably not availablre from the diy sheds , but go to your local builders merchant and they should stock it0 -
I'm using a Leyland SDM eggshell on some new shelving which is solvent/oil-based - it's a bit thicker than I thought it would be but it's got a great finish.0

Farrow & Ball I find do the most fantastic smooth finishes both in oil based eggshell and gloss. They are more expensive than most, but the coverage and finish are second to none.

or better still scan the f+b colour card ( not the printed ones from homebase , but the ones with the strips of paint samples on it ) and get it mixed in dulux or crown - more or less the same colour and finish , but cheaper0
