My Ford Focus does a similar thing, does your speedo drop to 0 just before the car cuts out? Mine happens when I'm turning either left or right or on stopping. Having done a google it seems to be a problem with the speed sensor ??

Running so low on fuel can be very harmful, my brothers ex had her can in the garage no less than 6 times in 2 months because she kept filling it up £2 a go and letting it run dry.
What tends to happen is the water vapour and any impurities in the fuel (dust, dirt etc) get funnelled into the fuel filter when the fuel is sloshing about near empty, fuel filter then bungs up and you run into problems.
