Council/HA Mutual Exchange

I am just wondering if I will be eligible to swap to a 4 bedroomed house if I have one child currently and am pregnant with my 2nd. We live in a 2 bedroomed home and the people we would be swapping with are a couple (only 2 people) living in a 4 bedroom home.
I read that you are allowed one extra bedroom, but if I am pregnant would they class us as needing three bedrooms and eligible for 4?
Thanks. :T

I do not know for sure but I think I've read on here that councils often take the view that children can share a room until they are relatively old (8? 10?), so you might not be lucky.

But wait for other posters to confirm their views; just didn't want you having no responses.

it will depend on ages of children and the gender. which I am guessing you do not know yet. I don't think you will be eligible for 3 bedrooms yet.

New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.
  • Check with your council/HA on Monday. Different areas have different rules depending on supply/demand.
  • I know that I am already eligible for 3 bedrooms as I was told I could exchange to a 3 bed place when it was just me, my partner and our daughter. So thats why im wondering now about the 4. Ill ring them monday but different properties have different landlords. Was just wondering what the general rule is on it.
  • The "general rule" is that social housing providers should make the best use of their stock. How they discharge that rule varies from area to area. In London, for example, it is unlikely that they would allow you anything bigger than 2 beds until you had at least 3 children, and even then availability may prevent that. In other areas it could well be that their 4 bed stock is relatively low demand, in which case you may be able to. It's impossible for anyone to give you specific advice regarding your elligability on here but I wouldn't be wildly optimistic from the info provided.
