painting dark wood cabinet cream?

I have a cabinet like this that I would like to paint cream to go with my new kitchen (when I get it!)
Is it as simple as sand, primer undercoat then paint? Or do I need to do something special? It is solid wood, not veneer.. I want it to be a shappy chic look, altho rest of kitchen won't be

What you have outlined is correct. Just make sure that you use an oil based undercoat, not acrylic.

Also ensure that you apply as many coats of undercoat as is necessary to completely obliterate the colour of the wood. It may be 3 or 4 coats you need to apply.

Thanks- Does it matter about the primer? I have one that is (I presume) non oil based (says to wash brushes in water) Or can I skip that stage and just use lots of undercoat?

Primers are normally acrylic based so that is fine.

Sorry-is that its fine to use acrylic based primer or its fine to just undercoat with oil based? I can be a little slow on the uptake sometimes ;)

You can prime it with the primer you have.

Wont do any harm undercoating without primer, just make sure its rubbed down well for a key to the new paint,For a good finish thin the paint a little and apply with a mini foam roller on larger areas and lay of with the brush
