Bodrum (Turkey)

Anyone been to Bodrum in Turkey before?

If so, are there any recommendations of places to visit? Thanks

The Castle is definitely worth a visit (you also tend to see it all lit up in the harbour when your airport transfer brings you to the resort - it makes me well up every time I see it, so pretty). Are you actually staying in Bodrum? From Bodrum minibus (dolmus) station you can visit loads of places all within about 30 minutes with great bays and beaches, much more laid back than Bodrum. There a good waterpark (the Dedeman) on the outskirts of Gumbet nearby which is good for a day out (it gets breezy there as its up on a hill so wear plenty of suncreen).

Do a couple of all-day boat trips too, a lovely relaxing day with drinks and lunch included, visiting 3 or 4 bays around Bodrum for a swim, or a sunbathe.

Theres a bazaar down by the harbour, and the usual Hamams etc.

We stayed in Gumbet last year which is the other side of the bay.
Loved the boat trip like balletshoes says. They seem to be pretty much all the same so make sure to get a good deal.
I really enjoyed the waterpark and it seemed to be well looked after.
Aim - BUYING A HOUSE  by November 2013!

Bodrum is a bit too manic for me, but there are lots of lovely resorts dotted around the Bodrum Peninsular.

    We particularly like Turgutreis.

    Re trips:
you can take the dolmus to lots of different resorts for days out.

You can visit Ephesus (one of the 7 Wonders of the World) but it's quite a long trip.
Or Pamukkale (google it) for a very different trip.
I've seen 2-day tours that do both Ephesus & Pamukkale.

You can visit Greece for the day by boat but I can't remember which island.

Turgutreis has a very busy market on Saturdays.

Kos is the nearest Greek island to Bodrum - an hour away by ferry, or 25 minutes by hydrofoil :).

We did the Kos trip, but found it was quite expensive to eat/drink and not a great deal to do in the amount of time you have over there.

I would also recommend boat trips and the water park. There are quite a lot of excursions you can do, and if you play the reps against each other you can get some really good prices!

I used to live in Bodrum, it is lovely there.

As others have suggested it is nice to get a dolmus and explore the Peninsula. You can get to lots of different little resorts, all less than 30 minutes away. Yalikavak, Turgutreis and GUmusluk are very nice, Ortakent is lovely too and there is very good beach there, one part even has camels on.

Boat trips are very good value for money at about £10 including lunch.

Don't book any tips with the hliday reps, they will charge twice the price for the same trip you can easily book in town at any of the travel agencies.

Bodrum castle is well worth a visit and if you ar inot history have a look at the mausoleum of Halikirnassus, there is not an awful ot there but it was one of the seven wonders of the world. Another wonder is at Ephesus, which is easy to visit on a day trip.

I actually like Kos too, there is a lot to see if you are interested in history and archaeology.

    Where are you staying?

We'll be staying in an apartment - haven't got the exact location at hand.

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions everyone, I've made a note of them all and will let you know how I get on when I get back.
  • One thing I did want to ask is how much money should we take? (4 adults, 8 nights, self-catering)

    Thanks,
