Flowerbox/hanging basket for North facing wall?
Hi all,
In an element of envy of our neighbours in the street having nice looking hanging baskets outside their houses we would like to pretty up the front of our house as well...
The thing is it would be a North facing wall and the flower box intended for under the kitchen window would only tend to receive direct sunlight from the West in the evening after about 6-7pm. The hanging basket would get around the same amount of sunlight, possibly slightly more.
Can anyone suggest some nice looking flowers that would be suitable for such an environment that wouldn't be too expensive to purchase?
Ideally relatively low maintenance species would be good but not essential.
many thanks in advance

Bizzy Lizzies are the most shade tolerant bedding plant, I have found that lobelia will do well when mostly in shade as well. If it is a trailing type they make a nice combination with bizzy lizzies.0

Hostas, ferns, anything woodlandy. Front of my house faces due south and heavily bricked. It's like a storage heater, so half the stuff has died over the time.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

I'd second Jojo and also add that a small leaved ivy(Hedera helix 'Arran' perhaps) is also great as its tolerant of most things including periods of drought if you forget to water. Can be pruned hard and you can tie two hanging baskets together to make a ball and have a hanging ivy ball!Greyer by the minute - Older by the hour - Wiser by the day0

I bought 4 trays of Homebase "basket and planter" mix. I recognised geraniums and petunias but I'm not garden-wise enough to know what the rest were. They had been reduced from £7.99 to £1.50.
I planted up two hanging baskets and two half barrels to flank my patio doors and they are positively flourishing! I know the annuals won't survive another year but the geraniums I will take cuttings of for next year. Yes, it's a North facing wall
Low maintainence because they only need watering every couple of days. 0
