What I don't understand is why pay for anti virus when there are so many very acceptable free ones around. Microsoft Essentials is brillant.0

Your question is hard to answer as you can ask 20 people and probably get 20 different answers! Also newer versions of anti-virus can drastically improve (or sometimes get worse). I used to use Norton but it was very resource intensive - but newer version is supposed to be much better. I now use ESET Smart Security - which was very good when it first appeared but now scores quite badly in group tests.0
