I work 16 hours a week, 3 days a week. 9-4, 9-4, 9-1. I agreed these hours with work so I can get to DD's nursery in time to pick her up (I live quite far away from work)

Boss informs me that we have training next week (I was told a month ago - Officially I was told "Block X and X day in your calendar its for XX training)

Nothing said about times etc - They are on my "full days" so i stupidly expected it to finish at 4

HOW WRONG I WAS - Training doesnt finish until 5:30 (No mention of me being paid for the 1.5 hours OT both days) but my main issue is, I wont be able to pick DD up from nursery in time for it closing and will get "fined" by the nursery for late pick up. Boss knows I dont have anyone to pick up DD so its not as if I can ask someone else to get her. (Dad not around)

Considering there's a VERY good chance I wont be paid (This has happened in the past - I've been at head office a few times and when 4pm came, I was still expected to stay until 6pm like everyone else - and I have done - HO is in another country, DD has been with family, who live a fair while away and cant pick her up next week) could i not just say at my usual finishing time that i'm off?

He only menioned yesterday training was finishing late

Ask him if you'll get paid, or if the company will cover you additional expenses.

Why not have that conversation first, then ask for advice based on his answers?

Could you ask if you can finish the training at another time?

Do your nursery have any type of childcare that you can pay for outside of normal times, if you explan the situation to them they may be able to help.

Tell him that after 6 hours of training, nobody is likely to remember anything more anyway....he's just wasting time after that.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • It's generally expected of me to stay and not get paid - Like at H.O. Te only reason i do stay at H.O is because they've obviously paid for my flights etc to get over there and i feel i SHOULD stay.

I dont believe the training will be relevant to me - its sales training - and altough I do some sales, I actually only get the contact persons name before passing it on to a colleague to follow up. Due to the nature of our business, this is all I will ever be able to do as I dont understand the product (I asked for product training when I started, its never happened)

Nursery will charge me £30 for every hour im late picking DD up. If I leave work at 5:30 I wont get there till approx 6:30 - 7pm (They wont charge me half hour - its full hour, states in the contract) so it could be up to* £60 a day

    Company wont cover the expenses.

The other annoying thing that i realised earlier is that after the training we're having a staff and family meal. DD has been invited - It starts at 6. There's not enough time for me to go get her, then get back if i finish at 5:30 (and obv i cant attend without DD as no baby sitter)

I wonder if he has done this on purpose?

Is there no friend or neighbour that can help out for a couple of days?
  • I wouldnt trust my neighbours with a rock, never mind my child lol

Friends all work too far away to get DD in time for nursery closing. Only friend i have who doesnt work cant drive and would take her 5 buses to get to the nursery with 2 kids in tow

are you really going to miss that much if you leave at 4? If its possible, ask to leave at your normal time and see if you make up the missed training on the day you finish at 1pm? Surely someone will take notes for you x

If it were me I'd just say at the beginning of the day that my hours are only until 4 and unfortunately I haven't been able to arrange child care after that time so I will have to leave then. Be apologetic about it and there's little they can do. The meal won't be compulsory so don't worry about that.
