When I switched on my laptop this morning a pop up appeared on the screen - Norton security scan, "a free and easy to use scanner"

I do not use Norton, only the free products suggested on MSE Tech forum. How did this get through?

You've probably installed some software recently where the Norton Security Scan was bundled along with it.

Beware, this sounds like a scam to me - Norton is not a free application so it is more likely to be a scam site that will purport to scan your computer, tell you that it has found a thousand and one viruses (that are non-existant really) and then proceed to try to sell you fake software to remove them.

Follow other posts on this board relevant to operating a program called Malwarebytes, that will do a legitimate free scan of your computer and really tell you what you have on it - including any scam scanning software!

This does come with some software, I have seen it a number of times, the big problem is that people NEVER look to see what is about to be installed !!!, and merrily tick install without even thinking of what they have just given permission to be installed on their computer.

You should ALWAYS check carefully and choose CUSTOM install where possible, then you can omit things like this.

The tick is normally there = Norton scan, Yahoo Toolbar, Google Chrome / other are some of the extras you have to untick when installing free software, say from file hippo.com. Nothing is for FREE so to get the free software just be on your guard and untick.

Pretty much this. Installing things in this commercial world can be a minefield.

Shockwave Player is a common reason to get the Norton Security Scan (it used to be bundled with Google Pack as well):

Just uninstall it via the Control Panel.
