External hard drive question.

i have managed to get my new Western Digital 320GB working and even managed to transfer 13GB of pictures and music files to it (took 4 hours), but when i go to check if they are there i can't open them. It says that it can't open that type of file( WHAT:mad: ), all the files are now NBZ files ???.
What has happened, where are all my JPEG pictures gone and all my RAW files from Photoshop
I can't open up any of them no matter what i do:o
(I bought this external hard drive so i could put all my photos onto it and so free up my PC internal hard drive and make things run faster).
Can anyone tell me what i have done wrong here, and what i can do to sort it out.....pleassssseee.........

How did you copy these files? Just copy one picture across as a test and see if you can open it.

  • I followed the simple on screen instructions, ticked the photo/music box and selected the e drive, and clicked the back up box. It did the rest.

  • Did you use a Backup program to copy the files? Have you still got the original files? If you deleted the original files you 'MAY BE' able to get them back via the recycle bin. According to Filext.com the file extension .NBZ does not exist.

So you didn't actually copy these files then! It sounds like you have used a backup utility but all you need to do is copy the files using windoze Explorer. As I said, copy one file as a test first.

sounds to me that rather than copying them, you've used some sort of utility to back them up.

If you just want to copy them to the external drive you should just be able to drag and drop them in explorer.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Ahh it sounds like you did use WD's Backup program if so it will have Compressed (archived) the files. It that case you should be able to run the program and restore the backup.

    Tony.
  • i just used the software that it came with, shouldi have done something else ?.
I still have the original files on th PC hard drive, i wasn't going to delete them until i know that i have copyed them properly to the external hard drive, and am able to retrive them.
What can i do now??, all 13GB of files are in this NBZ format, what can i do now please...
    - all i want to do is keep all my photos on the external hard drive and be able to retrive them into Photoshop as and when i want- thus keeping my PC small 35gb hard drive free so my computer runs a lot faster, or have i bought the wrong type of hard drive...
    helppp

A google suggests Western Digital USB drives ship with this Retrospect Express backup utility.

Rather than a backup process, I would go for SyncToy. It's free and works fine, just copies the files without creating a backup archive.

If you want to simply store your pictures and music on another external drive, delete what you have "Backed up" and simply copy the files across. The files have been saved in a non standard back-up format, so your applications cannot read them.
