Where do I stand with my car warranty?

    we need to know the car detail - but I would be pushing for an extension of the manufacturers warranty on the basis of the repair history.

    Putting the OP in another car is a significant loss to the manufacturer, and there would be no obligation for them to do so, even worse, if they did do so they would certainly not need to give a warranty with it.

    I have done this a number of times with a number of different brands, either my car, freidns, family and even neighbours have seen a benefit from pushing for an extension of the warranty - at the end of the day, if the car has had significant issue, the manufacturer would be the best place to approach, the faith they have in the car would be best reflected by them in offering and extension to the warranty.

    Ask, whats the worst they can say, no?

    Thanks for all the replies so far. In answer to some of the questions:

    The car is a BMW 3 Series 320i Touring first registered March 2009. It has high mileage (motorway miles) as a former fleet car, but full BMW service history.

    It has had at least nine injectors and eight coils replaced since new (not all in my ownership).

    I paid for the car outright with a debit card. There was a small deposit made, also by debit card, to reserve the car. Total amount was around £11K.

    The warranty expires in March 2012.

    I have consulted a solicitor but he hasn't explained my rights, just guided me as to the possible legal process to take. I am put off the legal route due to the high costs.

    I have not filed a defect report with VOSA, wasn't aware you could do this until now.

    A warranty extension would be good but getting anything out of BMW has so far been like getting blood out of a stone.

    get in touch with the service manager and dealer principle, write a letter to them, and send a copy to BMW CS in Hook, Hampshire - explain to them the issue which has occured, also point out the number of times the parts have been replaced, the milage when those parts were replaced, expecially important is to work out the average milage survival of each of those parts - then point out that they would be expect to fail again at XX miles if history repeats itself and point out that this will fall after the warranty expires.

    Nine Injectors and eight coils is clearly an inherent fault with another part of the vehicle - ask for an extended warranty to cover it - high mileage or not - this is not normal, especially not for that 2.0 BMW block.

    ....btw, which BMW dealer network is it? I have my suspicions....

    So you brought a high milage car for a knockdown price off a non-franchinse dealer who went bust and you think BMW will step in to help??

    its under the manufacturers warranty so of course they have the ability to step in to help. If it when faulty while the independent dealer had it they would take it to the main dealer to be fixed under warranty.


    this is not an AUC warranty, but the full manufacture warranty - so even though they bought it from a no name they still have full support from the manufacturer in any case.

    It makes no difference if the selling dealer was main, franchised or independent.

    Yes I expect them to put the car right if it is under warranty with them. Doesn't matter who I bought it from, a big selling point for me was the fact it was under BMW warranty.

    Thanks the advice. I have already attempted something roughly similar. After getting nowhere personally speaking to the deputy service manager, I emailed BMW UK. Went all the way to Tim Abbott at the top but got steered over to normal customer services. I've explained my predicament (and also a complaint about a scratch the car picked up in the dealer's possession) but they are not bothered in the slightest. I've not yet mentioned an extended warranty but that is the path I am thinking of going down. Might also give BMW HQ in Germany a try. The dealer network is Halliwell Jones by the way.
