Mouse not being recognised

Hi Techie peeps, me again.

Today's problem :D

When I boot up my desktop, it loads windows, then when I go to choose which user, I find my mouse doesn't work or isn't being recognised. I have a Microsoft Wireless Optical keyboard and mouse and thought I had the same problem as before - so went through the rigamarole of making sure the mouse and receiver were "connected". No luck. The receiver, which used to have one of the lights on, now doesn't, although when you press a button, the lights do flash, so it seems to be getting power.

I have tried putting a wired mouse onto the PC, but this doesn't work either. How can I get the mouse to work cos I don't know any keyboard shortcuts to get it to work.

Help :D

  • was the wired mouse plugged in when you switched it on?

no - it was the wireless set - it was turned off properly last night when everything was working. This morning, DS2 turned it on and I believe the mouse must have worked at least a couple of times cos he was onto the sign-on screen, then it's all stopped working. I've tried switching it off, turning it off at wall, but don't know what else to do.
  • Check if it needs charging. I have an optical mouse at work and the lights stay on the receiver (because it's connected to the pc) even when the cleaners have unplugged it from the wall. So I find it doesn't work and needs charging and my morning cuppa can last just that bit longer while I wait!

LOL The simple things are the answer!! I've changed the batteries in the mouse and it works!!

The reason I thought they were ok is that the light was still on and the batteries aren't that old. Must get a lot more use than I thought.

<slinks off in embarrassed fashion, thanking above posters and sorry for wasting your time :D>

That's exactly what I thought with mine until our IT bloke told me to plug it in! LOL I'm not a techie expert but I'll often post a very simple answer and it's great that odd time when it solves the problem instead of me being the embarassed one!
