I have windows 7 Home, Microsoft Office 2000.
When saving a new document, instead of saving it in the words of the title or first line it keeps trying to save it to the same name of a document I made ages ago. It does this with every new document.
How do I stop this please? Many thanks.

When you try to save your documents, you do "Save as..." don't you?

If you just let it save automatically it may only remember the first document.

aye what they said above. If you just 'Save' then it will do as you have not told it any different. Using 'Save as' lets it know what you want it to do.

It's been a while since I've used word 2000 and I'm working from memory, here are some possible causes and cures in no particular order of importance.

    1) Document or template in a startup folder.
Cure: Do a windows search for the <filename>.doc that it is trying to save. This could be a file in a startup folder. Rename it from to <filename>.doc to <filename>.old
As above, make sure that there isn't a <filename>.dot

    2) Orphaned temporary file made by Word but not deleted after a crash.
Cure: Either have a look here where it shows how to delete temporary files OR install and run Piriform CCleaner making sure that Office 2000 is ticked in the applications tab

    3) Corrupted Normal.dot
Cure: Rename the old one and word will make a new one next time it starts. Look here on how create a new normal.dot.

    4) You are saving as a .doc aren't you?
Cure: When saving ensure that save as type is set to document (.doc) not template (.dot)

if you're using a new document it doesn't just pick a random one so you do save and it asks for the file name.

I'd go with deleting normal.dot as a starting point as that's your blank template page.

Im guessing they are working on the same sort of thing/project so that the first thing it see's is the name of the project on the sheet so it saves as that.

Many thanks for all the help. I solved the problems a result of reading your suggestions. I was using my own custom made template. So I deleted it and made another custom one and that works fine now.
So simple when you know how!!!!

As a follow-on, in tools>options>save there is an option to prompt to save normal template.
If you check this it will stop the template rot that you have suffered from.

This is in Word 2003 YMMV
